Zombo Project

Divine tea Tea business Contact us
Zombo district was part and parcel of the 200,000 hectares of good soils for Tea growing in Uganda of which only 24,000 hectares has been utilized to date, but with emphasis on tea growing in Uganda by the President as part of the government’s action plan on poverty eradication in the rural areas, this part of the country is yet to experience the benefits of tea which is commonly referred to as “green gold”.
The Zombo Development Financial Services (SACO), the brain and drive behind Zombo Tea Project, owns 30% of the Zombo Tea holding Company that will be started to handle processing and marketing while the rest of the shares will be owned by the small holder farmers in Zombo and neighboring areas who will purchase shares over a period of time and will pay for the shares out of the green leaf deliveries.
The development of Zombo Tea Factory will be in line with Government drive to attract investment especially value addition in the agricultural sector and the acceleration of rural development, where large scale producers assist the small scale producers to gain access to highly competitive markets. The project is to be implemented in phases:-
a. Mobilization, registration and setting up of nurseries for the tea plantlets in the community/household based which will be spearheaded by Zombo tea project with support of government programmes responsible for tea and district sub-county agencies for technical support.
b. Mobilization, registration and sensitization of farmers shall be carried out by Zombo Development Financial Services in collaboration with government agencies, district and sub-county technical support.
c. Construction and setting up of the factory under a holding company that shall be formed from the two entities so that the factory is finished by the end of the second year since there is nowhere else to sell the green leaf.
The Zombo development financial services wishes to increase on the role it’s playing in improving the people’s lives in Zombo, having played a similar role when it encouraged people to grow coffee a project that was successful and will improve people’s lives and household incomes. One of the ways is through the development and construction of a planned factory in Zombo. The tea shall be grown by the local farmers who will then sell it to the factory for processing into a final product.
The proposed factory site for Zombo Tea Factory will be about Ten Acres and this shall be selected after technical consultation with all the stakeholders. Zombo is about 320 kilometers from Kampala and lies on Mbarara- Kabale road and stretching about 50 kilometers to the border with Isingiro district and Kabele district.
Tea will be grown in the area by first introducing mother gardens from which other potential farmers in the area will learn how to grow and monitor the growth and pruning.
The factory site will be selected out from a number of identified sites and also looking at the advantages that go with factory construction. The site will need to have enough land for construction of administration offices, labour-lines and staff quarters with accessibility to a grid power line and water supply.
